Hi, and welcome to this episode of Sassin's Sips. We are back with season five of Lost. Today. Oh, don't sigh. Today we're gonna talk about episode one because you left. And I'm Lisa.
SPEAKER_03And I'm Agnes.
SPEAKER_00Are you sure? Because like, what the hell?
SPEAKER_03I'm not sure of anything. I sighed because I can feel the I told you so coming from you.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I mean and what will you what will you be drinking while I tell you I told you so today?
SPEAKER_03I will be drinking, well, you know, a little under-the-weatherish. So I have some tea, and there may or may not be extra medicinal elements in my tea.
SPEAKER_00You know, alcoholics, you never see them with a cold, so I'm just saying. I'm just saying, you know, in the how I'm not promoting alcoholism, FYI. I'm making a bad joke.
SPEAKER_03Apparently.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I thought it was quite no, they just they have no kidneys or livers, but they don't get colds, so you know. There's that.
SPEAKER_03See, I think there's a silver line in everything.
SPEAKER_00You know, you want a cold, you want cirrhosis, you know.
SPEAKER_01It depends the day of the week it is. I listen, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00You know, okay. Um, I'm drinking wine, and I think we're gonna have to move on from alcohol because we're about to get canceled for a bad joke. I'm about to get canceled.
SPEAKER_03If we haven't been canceled yet, I think it's gonna take a little bit more than this to cancel us.
SPEAKER_00As this episode opens, I feel like we get classic season opener gaslighting, you know, where it's like, okay, who is this person and where the fuck are we? You know, and it you see the clock switch from 8.14 to 8.15. Oh shit, look at the numbers.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I thought about you instantly because the first season, the numbers, the numbers. I was like, okay, the numbers. Like, I'm like, I wouldn't remember any of these fucking numbers.
SPEAKER_00It's just it's just a trope with the show, you know.
SPEAKER_03But I remember 8.15. I'm like, okay, Lisa.
SPEAKER_00We see a man get up, he tends to the baby, he puts on a record, you know, the record skips, and then we realize that that man is actually Dr. Chang, who you may remember from all the Dharma initiative videos. I remembered, yeah, and here we are seeing him filming the videos. I just want to know when you saw that part, what was your thought process? Like, were you like, what the f no okay, no?
SPEAKER_03I was like, okay, this is on this is on brand. Yeah, pretty much. I wanted to know what secrets we're going to find out, but other than that, I was like, Yeah, this is on brand.
SPEAKER_00As he's filming, he gets interrupted, and a worker barges into the room and says that there's a problem at the orchid. So they drive to the orchid in one of those little dharmavans, and as they're making their way past the construction workers and down an elevator, which actually, and then you can see that it's still like under construction. So it's it's like a really big contrast from where we left off last season where it was like you know, fully realized and overgrown and out of use.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00A foreman tells him that in the process of tunneling through a certain spot, six carbon drill bits have melted, and an operator has become incapacitated. He shows Dr. Chang the seemingly impenetrable rock while the drill operator lies on the ground with the nosebleed. The foreman shows him a sonar image and it reveals the outline of the frozen wheel in an open chamber about 20 meters behind the wall. And we recognize that as the wheel of time.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00As the foreman begins to outline his plan to blow through the rock and expose the chamber, Dr. Chang emphatically forbids it. He believes there's an incredible amount of power on the other side that will allow them to manipulate time. When the foreman asks incredulously if they will be able to travel to the past and assassinate Hitler, Dr. Chang tells them not to be absurd, saying that there are rules which cannot be broken. He orders the foreman not to drill anymore because doing so might allow the energy to escape with potentially catastrophic results. He bumps into a worker as he leaves, and that worker is revealed to be Daniel Faraday with wearing a Dharma Initiative jumpsuit with the name Joe on it.
SPEAKER_03So I have a couple of questions. So while he's doing his recording, and obviously they're whatever station, I don't remember. And he goes, you know, you guys know.
SPEAKER_00Well, he was doing the recording for the Arrow Station.
SPEAKER_03The Arrow Station. He's like, you know, you're watching this, you know, your role here is blah blah blah. To protect us from the hostile indigenous people. I'm like, okay, my first are like, who are these people? And do you blame them for being hostile? I'm just you know, we all know the result of colonialism. Like, hello, hello. Um, that was one. Um, this is my first time on this episode when I had my little, I told you so. I told you so. I told you so moment.
SPEAKER_00This is when you had the moment?
SPEAKER_03No, I had two moments, but this is like a mini moment.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03And when I said that Faraday was somehow involved with what's going on on the island beforehand, I was like, woohoo. He was like he knew like how deep he was in there. I don't know yet, but obviously he's not some novice. He knew the drama before he was brought to the island. But this wasn't my this wasn't the big so you think. Don't start with I don't trust you. I don't trust you. You don't have to trust me. He was there where they were talking about the time travel, how much he was involved, who knows? He may have been just like listening here and listening there, and somehow gets off the island, and he goes to Oxford, he does all his experiments and his dog and stuff. Or okay, now I'm fucked. Anyway, he knows the island, and they brought and what's the what is Penny's last name again? Penny Whitmore. So Whitmore obviously had him part of this expedition for a reason because his prior knowledge of the craziness of this island. So that's my mini, like la la la la la la. We can move on. Because if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but if I'm right, I'm right. Because everyone has to be wrong with this show. Because there's no like you have to be high as fuck to get anything right with this show.
SPEAKER_00You'll find out whether you're right or wrong.
SPEAKER_03Do I smack myself again? Never stop.
SPEAKER_00So those scenes took place in 1977. That's the year that that's supposed to be taking place.
SPEAKER_03And it him the way he looks and Richard.
SPEAKER_00The way Lou looks. Oh, Richard.
SPEAKER_03Faraday and Richard. The non-aging shit. Yeah, okay. I'm not even trying to say.
SPEAKER_00Who, Richard?
SPEAKER_03No, the guy that we said that that was Faraday. Maybe that wasn't Faraday, maybe that was Faraday's father.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I don't know. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was Faraday because nothing makes sense with Lost. Hias Fuck. I swear to God, these writers.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03Shall we go on?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's a totally different show than it was when it first aired. Totally different show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I gotta tell you, I'm a it's a little bit more my speed now, but still, I totally couldn't watch this shit before as it was airing. I was like, what the f yeah, no.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so now we're gonna go back to 2001 through 2004. Immediately after Ben turns the wheel, a loud noise is heard and flash and a flash lights up the sky above the island. As the light dissipates, Locke realizes that it's suddenly raining, and Richard and the others, along with their entire campsite, have vanished. Confused and alone, he shouts for anyone an earshot. On the zodiac, Neil asks what the light was. Daniel, noting that they can still see the island, says that the raft must have been inside the radius. On the beach, Juliet and Sawyer realize that the smoke from the freighter has vanished, leaving nothing behind. Sawyer tells Juliet that the helicopter was heading for the freighter. Bernard suddenly runs onto the beach yelling for Rose. He asks Juliette if she's seen her. She tells him she hasn't, just as Rose comes running from the church. Sawyer tries to calm them down, suggesting that they head back to the beach camp, but Bernard exclaims that the camp is gone. They walk with him back to where the camp used to be. People are milling around, but there's no camp. Bernard explains that all the tents are gone along with the kitchen and all of their supplies. Are you trying to get my attention?
SPEAKER_03I'm practicing my dad's.
SPEAKER_00Just then, Daniel arrives with the other survivors from the zodiac, insisting that the camp is not gone. Charlotte embraces him in relief at his safe return. Dan asks Juliet to quickly take him somewhere man-made on the island. Juliet tells him there's a Dharma station, albeit the one that imploded, 15 minutes from the camp. Daniel is prepared to leave immediately before the flash of light has a chance to happen again. When Sawyer prods him about his statement about the camp, he replies, Your camp isn't gone. It hasn't been built yet. You're doing your I told you so, Dance. But you also said that they were gonna be in the future.
SPEAKER_03Did I say the future or did I say sometime?
SPEAKER_00No, you said the future. Oh whatever. Which is why I was like, oh, she's so close.
SPEAKER_03Oh, whatever. But it but my initial was we don't know when. Right. That was my initial, like, we don't, it's not a it's not a question of where, it's a question of when. Ultimately, that was my statement. So I told you so, I told you so, I told you, I told you, I told you so. But it's not really I told you so because you've seen it, so it's not like I was trying to prove a point to you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but you were, but it you were because you hadn't seen it and you you've you've guessed.
SPEAKER_03Does it say does it mean that I'm like crazy here, drug adult brain? Because I'm maybe I don't know, can't be worse than I already am.
SPEAKER_00As Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Charlotte, and Miles head toward the swan, Sawyer demands that Faraday explain what's happening. Dan compares the island to a record that's skipping. The island is now dislodged in time, and either the island or the survivors are moving through time. Sounding concerned, he asks if the survivors group is all accounted for. Sawyer says no, realizing that Locke is unaccounted for.
SPEAKER_03I have a question. Do I look like these scenes and they're going to the station? How did Bernard and Rose just disappear? They probably didn't go with them to the I would have been like stuck on you like glue. But anyway, like since everyone is moving, like think it's a moving thing out of time.
SPEAKER_00I feel like Bernard and Rose typically are like survivor adjacent. They're like, okay, cool. Yeah, me and her are gonna be over here. Like, you know, they don't they don't get up in the drama, they're just like, yeah, all right, we'll be over here, living our little old people lives, like chilling.
SPEAKER_01They were tired from like everything. Like, yeah, fuck you and your drama. We'll just go ahead and chill.
SPEAKER_00Meanwhile, while climbing a hill, Locke narrowly misses being struck by a damaged, low-flying plane, which then crashes in the jungle.
SPEAKER_03That was so cool. Because I knew exactly, as soon as I saw the plane, I knew exactly what plane it was. Yeah, at least it'll be so proud of me.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Finding a Virgin Mary statue that had fallen from the plane, he realizes that the plane is the beach craft that he and Boone later found in the jungle. It was like just in case you weren't sure about the plane, they threw you a Virgin Mary just so you could really, really heaven.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Locke arrives at the crash site and tries to climb up the cliff to the plane, shouting for survivors, but he's cut short by gunfire from the jungle below. One of the bullets hits him in the leg and he falls to the ground stunned. It's like deja vu, except, you know, this time he's shot. The shooter runs out of the jungle and it's Ethan. Assuming that Locke was on the plane, he demands to know how many others were on board. Locke tries to explain who he is that he wasn't on the plane, but Ethan doesn't believe him. He says that's ridiculous and prepares to shoot him. Suddenly the white light appears again, though Ethan doesn't appear to notice it, and for Locke, the day suddenly turns to night. Now Locke sees that the beach craft is now decaying on the ground where it fell when Boone climbed inside. Elsewhere, the group arrives at the Swan, which is still a crater in the ground, prompting them to conclude that they're back in what should be the present. Sawyer argues that they could change the past by stopping Jack and the others from launching the helicopter, which they believe crashed in the ocean. Faraday, however, is adamant that the past is like a street. One can move back and forth along it but not change it. As Locke lies barely able to move, Richard arrives holding a torch and a first aid kit. Richard removes the bullet from Locke's leg, explaining that he, Locke, told him where to come, or rather, will tell him. Richard gives John a compass that he must give back to Richard the next time he sees him, saying, I won't recognize you. He also tells John that the only way to save the island is to get those who left to come back. And in order to do that, he will have to die. I like what he's like. Um he gives him the compass, and John is like, Well, what what does it do? So this this compass is like it puts in perspective in I believe it was cabin fever when Richard visits Locke as a little boy, and he's like, which one of these is yours? And he's like, Not that you want, that they already belongs to you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So now it's kind of like yeah, it makes more sense. Another flash occurs, and the hiking group realizes that the crater has disappeared. Juliet uncovers the hatch in the ground, now intact. The group quickly moves to the rear entrance, and Sawyer repeatedly knocks on the door, but nobody responds. Faraday reiterates that Sawyer won't be able to meet Desmond because Desmond didn't remember meeting him in the past, and that he can't change whatever happened in the past. Frustrated, Sawyer reminds Daniel that he just lost all of his friends on the helicopter and not to tell him about things he can't change. After everyone else leaves for the beach, Faraday goes back and knocks on the door himself. Desmond opens the door, armed and wearing a hazmat suit. Faraday tells Desmond that he is uniquely special and that only he can help him because the rules don't apply to him. Daniel instructs the confused Desmond to seek out his mother in Oxford if he escapes the island. As he's about to say his mother's name, another flash occurs, once more causing a time shift. But unlike Ethan and Richard, when they were talking to Locke, Desmond appears to have been able to see and hear the flash. Inside the Hoff's drawler funeral parlor, now we're off the island, where quote unquote Jeremy Bentham's funeral was, Ben asks Jack to close Locke's casket so they can put it in the van out back. Jack inquires as to where they're going to take him, but Ben tells him that they must first pick up Hurley. Jack informs Ben that Hurley is in the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute, and Jack wonders how they have all become so estranged. And Ben tells him it happened because you left Jack. Later, Jack's shaving his beard in a hotel room, and Ben tells him that they need to recruit all the others. Jack has doubts, and Ben says that he has not seen Locke since the day the six left. Jack says that Locke told him he had a return, otherwise, everyone back on the island would die. Ben asks if Locke told him what happened to those left behind, and Jack says no. And Ben says, then I guess we'll never know. In Los Angeles, Kate is visited by Dan Norton, who's an attorney working for an unknown client. He claims to have a court order to conduct a blood test to determine if Aaron is actually Kate's child. Kate refuses. She tells him to leave, and that he says and that he says he's gonna come back with the sheriff. So she packs a bag, she grabs an envelope of cash and a gun, and her and Aaron pack up and leave.
SPEAKER_03Does he not know her history? Like telling her about the shelves means shit to her. Like, you know what I mean? Right. Right.
SPEAKER_00That just guarantees Oceanic 6 money.
SPEAKER_03On top of that, like, hello, that just guaranteed you are gonna get what you're booking for. Unless you wanted her to run.
SPEAKER_00At Heathrow Airport in London, Sun attempts to fly to Los Angeles via Oceanic Airlines. But the ticket agent tells her to wait, and she finds herself locked in a room by airport security. Charles Whidmore reveals himself as her captor, saying that he is angry that she had the audacity to approach him without showing respect in London.
SPEAKER_03That was funny to me. I'm sorry. Yeah, how dare you talk to me in public, bitch? I'm just like, I would have been like, um right.
SPEAKER_00But he still wishes to talk to her about their common interests. When asked what exactly they are, son replies, she'll kill Benjamin Linus. I was right, I was right, I was right. Yay! Yep. In the hotel room, Ben and Jack see a television news report on Hurley's escape, and they realize that their plan has just become more complicated. Meanwhile, Hurley and Saeed stop at a drive-in uh fast food restaurant before going to the safe house, which is an apartment building. Hurley asks Said about the man he killed outside Santa Rosa, and Saeed says he doesn't know who it was, but he was an enemy. When Hurley comments on Saeed's paranoia, Saeed reveals that he's been working for Ben and cautions Hurley that if Benjamin Linus ever tells him to do anything, he should do the exact opposite. Said notices that a piece of tape he'd placed on the door to the room has been broken, indicating that someone had entered the safe house. One man attacks Saeed at the door, and Saeed quickly kills him by throwing him over the balcony. Another man attacks him inside, but Saeed kills him too. But not before he's shot with an anesthetizing dart, which renders him unconscious a moment later. A passerby notices the dead body of the first man and takes a picture of Hurley with the gun in his hand and what appears to be blood, but is actually ketchup. Hurley runs inside, rescues Said, and the two escape. Finally, on a sailing boat with Penny in an Unknown location, Desmond wakes up, remembering what Faraday told him. While Penny brushes off the experience as a bad dream, Desmond insists that it was a real memory, and he sets off to Oxford to find Daniel's mother. And now I want to hear your thoughts, if you have any, before I go on. Just initial nothing. Besides, I told you so.
SPEAKER_03No, I that's it. I told you so.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um, I don't remember. Did we touch upon why Desmond was so special, or we just accept it as it is what it is? I don't remember.
SPEAKER_00It's just accepted.
SPEAKER_03Okay. That's what I thought. I just couldn't remember. I'm like, did I forget something? Because you know, it most likely, it's like a 50-50 chance that I forgot something. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Penelope and Desmond are both seen wearing wedding rings, indicate indicating that they marry after being reunited. Yay. And we talked about how nobody else seemed to have seen the flashes except Desmond. Neil, you know, aka Frogart makes his first appearance on the show after previously only being mentioned in SOS and starring in the Missing Pieces episode. Yeah, I know. He's okay. You have any guesses about who's behind the attorney looking um to to figure out, you know, Kate and Aaron's relationship.
SPEAKER_03My initial one would have been Claire. Claire? Claire's mother. Um, but I feel like it's something else, more nefarious.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03And exactly why I think that's probably not it. I think it's something a little bit more nefarious as far as they want their blood sample for something else. I don't know. I don't. This is lost. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So Desmond meets Daniel for the second linear time before Daniel arrived on the island from the freighter.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00So it's weird, right? Because now you have like the first time they met was in Oxford. In Oxford before Desmond came to the island.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00Now you have them meeting on the island, but but while Desmond is on the island.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_00And this is all taking place before the freighter technically arrived to the island.
SPEAKER_03Correct.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Just you know.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. I thought it was leading to a point.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, just just that's what remember, time isn't linear.
SPEAKER_03It's a street. You can go find it. Well, the street is kind of linear, but right, but it's not, but it is right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. The name of the law firm hired to get the blood samples from Kate and Aaron is Agostini and Norton, which is an anagram for Aaron Isn't, don't go in.
SPEAKER_03Was this an intentional anagram for the writers, or just a conspiracy theorist fandom anagram?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't know. Could be either, could be both. And Pierre Chang says Dharma has plans to harness the island's energy in order to manipulate time. And that's why you think that Faraday is involved.
SPEAKER_03Well, he was there. They saw him. I mean, we saw him, he was a worker, so he was there. Um, what his role okay, let me rephrase this. Uh Faraday was there.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03And whether let's say it's Faraday Sr. And he takes this bullshit story back home. He's talking about it, and his son, who's like a genius, just takes it and run with it as he goes older. Who knows? And it brings it back to Daniel Faraday. Or who fucking knows. I think that's more likely considering. Well, actually, no, because Faraday was already playing with time travel when Desmond popped up in Oxford. But he didn't know anything about an island. So that's why I think it might have been like Faraday's senior that we saw.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03Or because you know how Desmond has this, the whole like conscious, like maybe he didn't know it. Maybe it was oh fuck, I give up, my head's spinning.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Cultural references. A Christmas Carol. Sawyer calls himself the ghost of Christmas Future.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Published in 1843, a Christmas Carol is considered by some to be the first depiction of time travel in a novel.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Gilligan's Island. Sawyer calls Charlotte Ginger after he slaps Daniel Faraday.
SPEAKER_03I didn't take that as a Gilligan Island. I just kissed Ginger because she has red hair.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03But it's also kind of like Gilligan's Island, the desert on the island.
SPEAKER_00Classic TV show about a group of people that were stranded on a tropical island, and the character had a bit of attitude, like Charlotte, and hung around with a brainy professor like Faraday.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, it's a loose one, but it fits. The episode begins with the record skipping, which is later used as a metaphor by Daniel for how the island is moving through time. The beginning of this episode is similar to the beginning of seasons two and three. In all of these episodes, we're introduced to an unknown person we're not able to recognize at first. The person then turns on some music and begins to do some daily activities. So in season two, it was Desmond. In season three, it was Juliet. Furthermore, all of the season beginning starts off slowly and calm, but is at some point interrupted by something chaotic. Such as Jack running to the crash side in season one, the hatched door being dynamited in season two, flight 815 crashing in season three, and Hurley blasting through the pile of fruits in season four. Faraday insists that they can't stop the time flashes, and Sawyer asks him, who can? Faraday doesn't respond, but the scene immediately cuts to lock. But that's pretty much it for this episode. So unless you have anything else to touch on, I think it was like pretty straightforward as much as it could have been.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I could care.
SPEAKER_00You know, we have some things to think about, right? Like why is Desmond special? Like this whole idea of the island spinning or them moving through time or the island moving through time, like why do the other people need to go back? Why does Locke have to die? Like, there's a lot of questions still floating, but I feel like for the most part this this season five opener is really like a breath of fresh air for lost, where it's not too overwhelming.
SPEAKER_03I think also it's easier to enjoy. I say that I say that loosely, because I stopped trying to like, well, I want to know answers to this. I'm like, fuck it, they're never gonna give me any answers. And by the time they do, it'll be two, three seasons later that I forgot even had the question. So I gave up on it.
SPEAKER_00And I think that you and everybody else, I think they realized over time that they they had to they had to give us more because yeah, the mysteries are fun and you know, whatever, but at some point it's like, all right, how how much bullshit can we take as the audience?
SPEAKER_03Like instead of give you any answer, they give you a tidbit of something and they give you six more questions. I'm like, right, it's a top it's like being in a toxic relationship with a fucking TV show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, all right, but I'm gonna ask you this question. We've talked about how different seasons of Lost have different overall themes, and different like it's almost like a different show going from season one to season two, season two to season three, and so on. You know, four was all about kind of like the freighter, will they won't they?
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And now season five, we open, and this is the first episode that we get is where are we all over again? Except it's not where physically, it's where when are we? When, right? But taking all the information that you've had so far after seeing the first episode, what, if any predictions do you have for season five? Like what do you think is gonna be the theme or the you know the goal of this season?
SPEAKER_03I don't know, tethering it back to a time, I guess. Like get the island and people back tethered. And then how are they gonna get back to the island? If they're gonna go back, how they're gonna get back. How do you get like who do you call? Ghostbusters?
SPEAKER_00Ghostbusters, right?
SPEAKER_03So I think that's the I think that's most of this episode this season. And they're gonna they're gonna go back. So that's not even a question. They're gonna be going back. They're going back.
SPEAKER_00Okay, all right. Well, I guess we're gonna find out over the next few weeks or so how right you are or not.
SPEAKER_03Okay. I feel like with the insanity of the show is a badge of honor to be wrong. I feel like I'm like at least you're you're normal.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. But I'm actually right, except that you're right a few more times than I think you'd like to be. Which makes sense. That's on brand for me, also. Okay, we're gonna talk some business here. The goal going forward, so some housekeeping, even though we probably should have done this at the beginning of the show, but you know what? You stuck around, so I guess it's important to I don't know, forget it. Um some housekeeping. Before we were every two weeks, going forward, the goal is to get back to an every week release. Forgive us if sometimes life gets in the way and we miss a week. We'll do our best to let everyone know if we're gonna be missing a week, but accountability, and we're gonna go back to uh weekly updates. Also, this spring, we are premiering our new feature, which is Sassin Sips Spotlight. Our call to action, as you may have seen, we've already leased one episode.
