Hi, and welcome to today's episode of Sass and Sips. Today we are gonna talk about season five, episode 11 of Lost. Whatever happened, happened. I'm Lisa.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Agnes. I have to say today. Oh the last couple of times you do the intro, you're like, eh, like you start off being, I don't know who you are. And then Lisa comes back.
SPEAKER_00Is that because the last couple of times I'm like fucking bedbound? So I'm just like embracing that I I live in bed now.
SPEAKER_01You're taking the improv to a whole new level. I'm kind of feeling it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Maybe we do different accents.
SPEAKER_00Mmm, okay then.
SPEAKER_01Get into character.
SPEAKER_00I know. I'm just honestly, I'm just sipping on some coffee because I have to not I have to, but since the last time I have to because apparently when I break an ankle, I don't just break an ankle. No, I break an ankle in two places. Need surgery. And so um I'm not taking any more pain medication, but I'm a fault risk, so I don't need anything. You don't need anything to make you I'm already like unstable on these crutches, and I cannot put any weight on my ankles, so I I just can't risk it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I'm drinking coffee too with Kalua.
SPEAKER_00Um, but you have just pour a little, pour a little for me, you know. Pour one out for your homie. You want some? Pour one out in your cup for your homie.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I was gonna like pass it through the computer for you.
SPEAKER_00Oh, oh, we had the same rain today. Yes, but there's water in here. My cook my coffee is in this one.
SPEAKER_01Okay, but I got this system.
SPEAKER_00I got two cups. I'm double fisting.
SPEAKER_01Double fisting. I go into work every morning double fisting because I have like okay, so my boss got me a frost buddy, and I have my frost buddy for my iced coffee, and then I have my this one for my hot coffee, and between the two, I'm pretty good for my four-hour shift. Maybe just a little bit.
SPEAKER_00It'll last you all day.
SPEAKER_01No, last you four hours, and then then I then sometimes at work I'll refill the iced one. I'll make more iced coffee because she keeps like the good stuff in her office, like the syrups. Like we have the admins have a good we have like so she keeps like the different flavors of syrups and some caramel in her office. So what's in the blue moon? I'm like, you know what? I'm gonna make a sub iced coffee. Nice.
SPEAKER_00Do you have any hot takes on this episode? Um, I probably do, but I don't remember them at the moment. Oh, awesome.
SPEAKER_01That sounds about as that's on brand for me.
SPEAKER_00That very, very much so. All right. Let's let us begin. I don't know what's wrong with me.
SPEAKER_01So we have enough time to go into that.
SPEAKER_002005. Kate carries an infant Aaron to the door of Cassidy's house. The two women reunite and Cassidy speaks of seeing Kate on the media coverage of the Oceanic Six. Kate reveals that Sawyer's whispered request on the helicopter was to find Cassidy and his daughter Clementine and make sure that they were cared for. Didn't we kind of figure that's what it was? I mean, I knew that's what it was, but yes, you figured it. She hands over an envelope of money and talks to her about Sawyer, telling her the story of what really happened on the island. Cassidy is like, mm, Sawyer's actually a coward, and he only jumped off the helicopter because he couldn't face the future with you. But okay. What do you make of that? Do you think do you think there's truth in what Cassidy said?
SPEAKER_01I think I think it's truth. I think there's some truth in the Sawyer that she knew. Okay. Because the short time on that island, because at that time was still short time, I feel like it's been years. He did, like he changed within a matter of my like he's he didn't do a complete 180, and but he did he changed. And I think he even knew, like I think he really wanted to go home. I really think he really wanted to get the fuck off that island. And yeah. So I think it was some truth to it, to the Sawyer of the Past.
SPEAKER_00Kate also visits Carol Littleton and tells her that she has a grandson named Aaron. She tells her that Claire survived the crash and that she claimed Aaron as her own in order to protect him and because she needed him. She tells Carol that she checked into the motel and that Aaron is sleeping in a room two doors down. She said she told him she's leaving him with his grandmother while she's away, and she tells Carol that she's going back to the island to find Claire and bring her back to her son. As Aaron is sleeping, Kate tearfully says goodbye to him and leaves the motel room. On the island now we're back in nineteen seventy seven. Jen regains consciousness and finds Ben and finds Ben's bleeding body. Oh my god. He places him in the van. Yeah. He places him in the van and heads back to the barracks. At the barracks, Horace briefs the gathered Dharma personnel on the prisoner's escape. When Jack steps forward to ask questions, insert I roll here, Horace regards him suspiciously and states that the prisoner must have had help from one of us since no hostiles were seen crossing the fence. Later, Roger Linus approaches Kate and asks for help operating a winch to move the burned Dharma van. Roger and Kate seem to have a connection as they talk. But then Jen arrives, and as he carries Ben to get aid, Roger sees his injured son and runs runs after him. But they have a connection, yes. I like I can catch that, but then as soon as he says his name, Kate is like, it clicks. It clicks. You know, right.
SPEAKER_01It took me half a took me half a beat. I'm like, huh?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. As Sawyer examines the security monitors, Kate approaches him to ask what happened to them. A suspicious Horace arrives and discovers them talking. Horace finds a janitor set of keys still in the lock of the holding cell. He states that there's only three people with these kinds of keys, including Roger and the new arrival Jack. Seeing that things are spiraling out of control, Sawyer orders Miles to keep Jack, Kate, and Hurley in a house and keep his eyes on them in order to not complicate matters. Oh, and by the way, um Hurley is a chef. That's his job. I think that's kind of fitting.
SPEAKER_01I think it's a great apau.
SPEAKER_00Sawyer approaches Roger to ask for his keys. Not finding it, Roger says he must have left them at home. Julia tries to save Ben, but he won't stop bleeding. Back at the house, Hurley and Miles are trying to figure out the consequences of Ben's shooting and time travel. Hurley is like looking at his hands. And he's like, come on, like back to the future. I'm trying to see if I'm phasing out. Um Sawyer tries to recruit help from Jack, but he refuses, telling Kate that he already saved Ben once and he did it for her. Jack claims that he's done trying to fix things and now puts his trust in the island. Kate remarks that she doesn't like the new Jack, but Jack reminds her that she didn't like the old him. I have remind me to um at the end to tell you my notes on the Jack Saeed Ben thing.
SPEAKER_01Jack Saeed Ben. Okay. I had to put like the fish like the visuals of them. I'm like, okay.
SPEAKER_00Maybe I should just like write it down if I can find a pencil. Kate arrives at the infirmary and donates blood to keep young Ben alive. As Kate and Roger sit at Ben's bedside, he admits that he may not have been the world's greatest father since Ben stole his keys because of him. Inside the house, Hurley is trying to understand the unanswered questions of time travel. Miles explains to him that they are in their present while everyone else is in their past. Hurley wonders why a future Ben couldn't remember that Saeed, the guy who tortured him in the future, is the same guy who shot him in his past. Miles has no answer. You have the same question. I did. But it gets answered this episode. And let's be honest, the truth is that nobody ever said that Ben didn't remember.
SPEAKER_01Well, I actually I was wondering, I was like, hey, does he remember? Right. Like at like because technically right now, as it goes, you know, his history is changing, you know, parallel. So I'm like, I wonder if it's like poof. That's what I think of it. Anyway.
SPEAKER_00Juliet is able to stabilize Ben, but can't heal him. Juliet tells Kate that the others may be able to save his life. She secretly helps Kate load Ben into a van, and Kate drives out to the sonic fence. Sawyer catches up to her and helps her rather than stops her. He says that he's doing it for Juliet because Julia feels it's wrong to let a child die. Juliet bursts into the house, dismisses Hurley and Miles, and confronts Jack as he's getting out of the shower. This is like the best scene in the whole episode. When she walks in that door and she's like, Where's Jack? And they're like, She's about to go ham. She's like, And I'm living for it. And they're like, We're out of here.
SPEAKER_01Living for it.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I know like I've been stuck in bed, so it's like it reminds me of like one of those one of the scenes in Cheers when Frazier is shit talking Lilith and Lilith walks in behind him. Oh yeah. And they're all just like, you know. Whoosh. Yeah. Anyway. Um, she asks why he came back and why he refused to help Ben. Jack responds that he was supposed to come back, but he doesn't know why yet. Kate and Sawyer carry Ben into the other's territory. Stopping by a stream, she tells him about Cassidy and Clementine. They discuss their relationship, and Sawyer says he and Kate would not have lasted. He says he's grown up in the last three years as a group of others surround them. And Sawyer demands he really he has, yeah. Sawyer demands to be taken to Richard Albert. The others escort them into the jungle where Richard emerges. Richard recognizes Sawyer but asks why Kate is there. After Sawyer asserts that Kate is with him, Richard asks if the boy is Benjamin Linus. Sawyer asks if Richard and Ben have met, which Richard does not respond to. He explains that if he takes Ben, the child will not remember any of this, will lose his innocence, and will always be one of us. One of the others tries to stop Richard from taking Ben, saying that Ellie and Charles won't be happy, but Richard responds by saying that he doesn't answer to them. After Kate hands over Ben, Richard carries him through the jungle alone. He approaches the wall of the temple, passing by a large hole in the ground, and after a pause, Richard pushes open a stone door and takes him inside. Back in 2007, in the makeshift infirmary in the Hydra, Ben wakes up to find John Locke looking at him. As Ben's eyes widen in surprise, John welcomes him back to the land of the living. Ain't that some shit?
SPEAKER_01And it was his I And it's funny for so many reasons because A, you know, Ben's awake, yay. But the dead man who's now alive is telling Ben, welcome to the land of the living.
SPEAKER_00So it's just yeah. Here's my I mean, that's the end of the episode. But before we go into any other notes, I want to tell you my thing because I don't want to forget.
SPEAKER_01I feel like this episode was quick.
SPEAKER_00It was quick, yeah. Yeah. I mean, a good thing is that we got like the answers that you were kind of seeking, like why Kate would come back and leave Aaron behind. How come or does Ben remember? And if he doesn't, why doesn't he? And on that note, remember we were talking in the last episode when Saeed shot him, and we're like, oh, it's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. You know, he Ben is over here like you're a killer. And Said is like, you're right, I am. But because Saeed shot Ben, led him to have to go. So it's like not only is it kind of Saeed's fault, for lack of a better word, that Ben becomes who he is.
SPEAKER_01But Ben is a reason, Said who's he is the reason Saeed shot him to begin with. It's like a vicious circle, right? But Adult Ben caused Saeed to want to shoot to avoid him getting that point. But shooting him getting to that point.
SPEAKER_00Right. So had Saeed not shot him, you know, maybe he would not have become the Ben we know now.
SPEAKER_01Right, but who would have thought that the others could save him?
SPEAKER_00And it was and on that same note, had Jack actually stepped in to fix, quote unquote, fix him, operate on him, provide his medical assistance, maybe he wouldn't have had that same future. And it's you know, it's one of those things where they say, like, oh, you can't change the past. So whatever.
SPEAKER_01But I feel like he was he was just being petty and he was being a petic petty petty. He was being a petulant child.
SPEAKER_00Well, and what happened to first do no harm? Like you literally are refusing to save a kid's life. I don't care.
SPEAKER_01I mean Jack is never the good guy, he is the quote unquote good guy. Well, you know, it's like like, oh, I'm your friend. We're just I'm a good guy, and I'm just trying to get into your pants. That's not a good guy. So I'm a good guy, I saved lives. No, you're just doing it just so you could be the good guy. No, you're a douche, you're a douchebag.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it it was pretty shitty of him to say no, and I'm glad that Juliet called him on it.
SPEAKER_01I um had my own little uh moment because I felt stupid that I didn't think of it before.
SPEAKER_00Oh, do tell.
SPEAKER_01I know anything that made me feel stupid, right? Lisa, uh I I don't know why. Okay, I get why they lied when they got rescued. I get the lie. It would have led to more questions. Yeah. But they didn't have to. There was no reason for Kate to lie about Aaron, other than she just wanted him. Like she would have been saying, like the lie itself would have been intact. Yes, Claire was pregnant, she had the baby, she we assume died missing, whatever. She could have given Aaron to his grandmother, and I did she think I had to protect him. No, she I'm like, oh, she really did do it for herself. Like, I don't know what took me so long to come to the that aha moment. I feel stupid.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think that there wasn't a reason to lie except of what she said that she wanted him. She wanted him. You know, aside from that, yeah, I guess you didn't have to lie. Trivia!
SPEAKER_01Trivia, yeah, trivia, yeah.
SPEAKER_00This is the second Kate-centric episode title to start with the word whatever. And the other one was whatever the case may be.
SPEAKER_01Every time I think of when I listen to this title, I want to say whatever happened to Baby Jane.
SPEAKER_00Some cultural references. Back to the Future. Hurley looks at his hand, waiting to see if he disappears. In this movie, Marty McFly's hand starts to disappear as he was being erased from existence because he had interfered with his parents' past, preventing his mother from falling in love with his father. Seconds after this reference is made, Sawyer comes in in a rush calling Jack Doc, the same thing McFly used to do in the movies when looking for Doc Brown. Uh Catch a Falling Star, the song. Uh 1957 song written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockrest. That's the one that Claire's father, also Jack's father, used to sing to her as a kid.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00And Patsy Klein is back, and we hear Patsy Klein singing in the car as Kate is driving to um Cassidy's house. I wonder what that conversation was like when Kate shows up at Cassidy's house. And Cassidy is thinking, like, oh my god, Kate, I know her. And then she comes in and says, But by the way, this is from this man who we were on the plane crash together. Like, what Cassidy must have been thinking, like, wait, what the fuck? And then even on Kate's end, and Kate thinking, wait a minute. I know her.
SPEAKER_01Right, because they don't know that they know each other until that moment. But that scene, okay, I'm gonna tell you why I was a little confused because everything was so organic and natural, there's no questions. It's kind of like, okay, so what happened with the plane crash? You know, the fact that you know the man that I my baby dad, like, and that we know each other. I'm like, wait, did I miss something? Because I didn't think they knew that they knew each other. They didn't, they didn't, but they I mean they knew each, but they didn't know that we all knew each other. Like Cassidy knows Sawyer, Cassidy knows Sawyer.
SPEAKER_00Well, remember, Cassidy knew Sawyer before the crash, Kate knew him after, so there was never overlap between.
SPEAKER_01So no one knows this, no one knows there's a connection, but the way she just showed the door and everything's all hunky, like there's no like confusion.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01I think the assumption is that they discussed Sawyer off camera, then they should have done that on camera because I felt like I missed something. Because obviously, this all happened like six seasons ago.
SPEAKER_00You know what I mean? So you'll I think that it would have just been more fun if when when you know Kate is going there, Kate is going there on behalf of Sawyer, and then when Cassidy, you know, it's like Kate's told me where to find you, right? So like she's just assuming that she's just meeting somebody and is gonna say, Hi, my name is so-and-so, I'm here on behalf of so-and-so. But then when Cassidy comes to the door, it's like, wait, but there was no confusion. Cassidy? But I I and I think that that's the missed opportunity because that would have been like, wait, because it made me feel like I missed something. I was like, wait, why is there no confusion? Right. And then when when Cassidy says, Oh my god, what are you doing here? Kate could have been like, Well, you're never gonna believe this. It was like it was just so yeah, it made it seem like things. So glossed over.
SPEAKER_01Right. I'm like, wait, they're not supposed to know the connection. How did they yeah? I thought I was just all the way fucked. I'm like, I must have missed something. You didn't, but I mean they forgot that they didn't the writers forgot that they didn't know the connection. I think that's what happened.
SPEAKER_00Maybe, but yeah, it it just it just it felt like such a missed fun scene. I think that that's I mean, that's pretty much it for this episode. Unless you have any last things to add.
SPEAKER_01Surprise, surprise, no. Well damn.
SPEAKER_00The next episode is Dead Is Dead.
SPEAKER_01Not not on the island, it's not, but okay. Let's go with it. And the rest of the world, yes. Not on the island.
SPEAKER_00Okie dokie. Have you guys noticed that there is now a text us feature in our show notes? I don't know if you have, I can't hear your answer. No, Lisa, tell me more. Well, we can't text back to you. You can text us.
SPEAKER_01I think they're glad that they can't get text messages from us.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, could you imagine? That'd be but that would be so much more fun.
SPEAKER_01But as much as we babble and go on and on about this nonsensical stuff, they're like, oh my god, these are crazy. Uh they would have to like block us. They're like, okay, I'm done talking now.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, try it out if you feel so inclined. This week we we're not gonna give you like a specific call to action of what to text, but we might some goodies planned. We're trying to think of fun ways to utilize that new feature. So until next time, do not drink and drive. Please drink responsibly, and visit us at sassinsips.com for more. And until next time, I'm Lisa and Magnus. And we are out of here. See you later, bye.
