Hi, and welcome to this episode of Sass and Sips. You are here with Lisa and Brittany, and we are about to talk about episode um six, The Brother from Clickbait. And as you know, this is the podcast where we drink and we dish and we watch and we rewatch, and it's all about drinks, friends, and television. So thank you for hanging out with us tonight. I'm Lisa. I'm Brittany. And what are you drinking tonight, Brittany?
SPEAKER_00I'm drinking 19 crimes again, just like episode one. I feel like this should have been an episode eight drink to like bring it full circle, but well, I do have the bottle.
SPEAKER_01I have the bottle for us for eight.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes. Oh yes. Oh, that's so cute.
SPEAKER_01So I'm drinking my Pinot Noir. Ooh. They were out of Shiraz today in the liquor store. Well, let me let me preface that. They were not out of Shiraz. They were out of the big bottle of yellowtail Shiraz. It's just so not economically prudent for me to buy the small bottle. So it's it doesn't make sense. Yeah, so I'm I've got a heavy pour going on.
SPEAKER_00So this will be fun. Yeah, no, this was definitely a heavy pour too. So I got myself all comfortable. I have my dog on my lap. I have my little area set up. And then I saw Lisa's heavy pour, and I had Pediolite and Water, still recovering from COVID, and said, fuck it, let's do wine. And so I text my sister and I was like, Can you bring it to some wine? Yeah, Cameron to the rescue. And she she put the wine in a mesa glass. I think it's like that. Super, super cute. Yeah, no, I love that. But the thing is, is that like now I can see how much I'm drinking, right? Like on the side, it says milliliters.
SPEAKER_01That's a big, that's a big one.
SPEAKER_00This is 200 milliliters. I should know my conversions. Wait, I don't know my conversions. We got cups on the side. Um, it's pretty much like two, it's almost a cup, it's almost a full cup. Yeah, it's just underneath a cup. I would say seven eighths of a cup, maybe, because it's really up there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's gonna be a fun day tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01Oh, if only I was there to witness it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't want to be there to witness it.
SPEAKER_01Uh cheers. Cheers, clink, and we'll get through this. We'll giggle and we'll get through, and then you can sleep it off. Take a couple of aspirin before bed and a glass of water, and you'll be fine tomorrow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I like I saw my pediolite and water. I'm ready.
SPEAKER_01Take your aspirin with your pediolite in your water, you'll be fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it does wonders for me, so I don't question it. And I drink the sugary water.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. All right. Let's get started. I have a mad libs ready for us, and I want to say thank you to the Crime Diner podcast.
SPEAKER_00And as you know, I'm I want to say thank you because they're doing me such a favor right now.
SPEAKER_01These ladies came through for us, they came through with some words. Like I put out a call and they hopped too. So I so appreciate the love, ladies. But we still need more words to fill in. Oh fuck. You're not completely off the hook. All right, let's go. I need a silly word. Goober. Goober. Okay, a type of liquid.
SPEAKER_00Why do I feel so stupid? We'll go with wine.
SPEAKER_01Wine. Okay. Yeah. A verb ending in ing. Milking. Well okay then. Um another verb. Um. Um I'm gonna say scratch because I just scratched my hand.
SPEAKER_00Sure. I was gonna say pump. So pump?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But we'll go with scratch.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna use pump for the next verb. Food. Noodles. And a noun.
SPEAKER_00Um Ruby's even fed up. Did you hear that? She was like, er. Um, yeah, my dog Ruby. Oh, no, I don't want to insert her in this mess. I was gonna say Ruby's a noun, but no. Um I don't know, Lisa. Pick the noun. No, it's the nouns that fuck me up every time. Um, okay, what if we say Nick Brewer? No, that's a proper noun. Yeah. Um just just I'm struggling. I don't, I I can't, there's so many out there.
SPEAKER_01And I just need one of them.
SPEAKER_00Ah blanket.
SPEAKER_01Okay, fine. Okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00It's not gonna make sense. It's not gonna be funny.
SPEAKER_01It might the title is called Tonight at the Rusty Anchor. Musical Monday. Start the week right with two for one My Goobers as we sing the classics from your favorite Broadway bottles. Tiptoe through Tuesday. There's nothing better than an ice cold laptop and songs from an error gone by. Uh wet and wild Wednesdays, two for one shots of wine. Show us what the good Lord gave you in your hard white t-shirt. Hard and white t-shirt. Yeah. Thirsty Thursday. Join some of our nation's smooth heroes, astronauts, as they take time off milking on Earth and rehydrate with our tang teenies. Flip cup Friday. It's game night at the Rusty Box. The more you scratch, the more tall we look.
SPEAKER_00The more we scratch, the more tall we look.
SPEAKER_01Saturday sizzler. We're grilling noodles out on the patio. Oh, that sounds delicious. Okay, but that does sound good. Grilled noodles, grilled noodles. If you put noodles on the barbecue, they'll fall. They'll fall right in.
SPEAKER_00What if they're in like one of those pans that you could put on the barbecue? Fine.
SPEAKER_01Have some logic.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and like smoky noodles. It could be a thing.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's your summer. That's your summer task now.
SPEAKER_00Grill some noodles. Don't come over and eat my shit because you're just gonna get grilled noodles.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um, start early with a bite and leave late with the blanket. Actually, that's just gonna make sense. Yeah, and sing it out Sunday. Tonight, ladies pump for free as long as they come with the songs to sing. All right, all right.
SPEAKER_00What a weird week.
SPEAKER_01Wrap that up. Oh my gosh, my allergies were bothering me so much yesterday. I was rubbing my eye all day. Today finally started to feel better, and then of course, we hit record, and I'm like, Oh, I'm leaky.
SPEAKER_00That's okay. You're leaky, I'm yawning.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, you said it. I'm not, I can't look at you.
SPEAKER_00Uh I yawned, I muted myself and yawned. Uh it's so bad. Like, so prior to clicking record, Lisa and I were just looking at each other on Zoom, and I was yawning, and she was yawning, and then I was yawning, and then Ruby yawned. And I was like, this is what this week's gonna be, huh? Like, oh man.
SPEAKER_01All right, you ready to get into the episode? Yeah, so this is episode six.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so after this would be my favorite so far.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, but after this, after this, we only have two more, and so and this episode finally gives us a little bit of resolution, a little bit, yeah. It was because you get close to know what happens, mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the structure of this episode was wild. I feel like they really like they could have gone a different way with this episode where it wouldn't have been as powerful, but the way that they played the story was fucking amazing. That by the end, I was like, no, I want to watch the next episode. And I just really I can't wait. I can't wait until like, and I feel like every week I'm saying this, I can't wait till we're done recording, so that's why tonight I could watch the next episode.
SPEAKER_01And last time you were convinced that the brother has something to do about this whole, you know, the whole thing I wasn't wrong, yeah. I mean he looks the part, okay, but but were you right? And we'll get into that. Um, yeah, we'll get into that. Yeah, we don't know.
SPEAKER_00So episode six starts off with, and I know exactly how it starts off, but I just want to go right to the top of my synopsis. Oh, cool. Um, yeah, so for some reason I thought I was at the top and I wasn't. I was like, it doesn't start off that way. Um, okay, so it starts off explaining Simon's story. We know that Simon is Maggie, not so Maggie, Sarah's brother. This was one of the women that Nick was talking to on like one of the dating apps. So she went under the pseudonym um Maggie Oxley, right? But her actual name is Sarah. So Sarah's actual brother, Simon, works for like um like yeah, which is kind of like moderator, moderator, yeah.
SPEAKER_01YouTube type.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it it seems like almost as if he was going through like the shit that people upload on Facebook. Yeah, that's that's kind of like yeah, so it was like all these like graphic and disgusting videos, and so yeah, you hear the ignore, delete, ignore, yeah, delete. So I was just recently oh, I forgot that I really I forgot the YouTube channel. I'm gonna have to look it up. And then maybe if I remember next episode, I'll mention it. But I was stumbling across YouTube the other night, and I happened upon a channel that kind of like interviews people within like certain industries, but they keep them completely anonymous and like the people in the video wear masks and they change their voices and everything. And so there was a person who was a Facebook moderator who was in like an interview, and they were saying, like, the shit that they've seen is absolutely disgusting. And like I had to stop the video. I want to say, if the video, if the interview was like five minutes long, I stopped it in like 10 seconds because I heard this. Yeah. And I just, and so they were just like the parts that I heard without like being super graphic and disgusting to like keep thinking about those things, they were just saying that they're scarred for life. So I can only imagine how Simon feels, especially after what he has gone through with Sarah. So that is Ruby yawning. Ruby, she's my baby, she is an 18-year-old, almost eight, well, 17 and a half year old Chihuahua, and she doesn't bark, she doesn't yip, she doesn't make any, she doesn't cry. All she does is yawn. Yeah, and she yawns like that. That that's her only noise she makes. So if you happen to hear like a little like ow, that's my Ruby. So and she's sitting on my lap on a blanket, like Chihuahua's. We have to post a picture of Ruby. We do have to post a picture of Ruby because she's my baby, uh, but anyway, yeah, she's a good girl, she really is. She's had a tough life, and she's a good girl. I got her when she was 13. But anyway, back to clickbait. Um yeah, so um the episode starts off with like seeing Simon at his job, but then there's a flashback the six months ago. And so while he was working at his job six months ago, you see that like as he's moderating videos and saying like um, no, like for like that somebody was being a pervert or no, inappropriate, no, um, which was like kind of gross. You see like something pop up on his screen, and then this is Sarah is online. And the first time I watched this episode twice, um, I like watching the episodes twice now, but the first time I watched it, I was just like, Oh, okay, like maybe she's like live streaming or something, and this is like on the platform that he's like moderating on. But the second time I watched it, I was like, wait a second, did he set up cameras in her apartment? And when she walks by them, like he he like gets a ping, like a notification, and then he can like open it up.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think it's on her computer. Oh, it's on her computer, it seemed like it was on her computer. But the thing is that even if you because I didn't quite catch it the first time either, it was a little confusing. But as he's like he's chatting with her while and she's on the phone, so now he can see her on the phone in her yeah, like he was texting her, and she's saying something like, Oh, I'm at work, I gotta go. And you see that she's completely lying, yeah. So then you you have to realize that she doesn't know that she's that he can see her because otherwise and that was like very, very weird to me.
SPEAKER_00I got such a weird start, like a weird feeling from the start of that episode. And I mean, like, I feel like as a responsible, I feel like he's almost her caretaker in a sense, and we'll we'll talk a little bit more about that, like as this we don't know about honestly as this one scene goes on, but yeah. Um so may gets a notification that Sarah's online, he's watching her, and she's on the phone with someone, and she's saying, like, I love you too, and things like that. And um obviously, like, she's not on the phone with Simon, and we already know like they're orphans, like from the last episode, we know that like they're orphans, they only have each other, blah blah blah. So it's like it's only them two in in their story. So who could she be saying I love you on the phone with?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so and I think she mentions he well, he comes, he goes to her after, I guess after he gets out of work, yeah. And he mentions, and he's like, Okay, there's food in your house and you're in your apartment, and it's clean, so who's the guy? And she's like, But why do you think and now of course we also know that he's been spying on her, but yeah, but he can't say that, and he was being very like tiptoey around that, like strategically. It was it was weird to see Simon that way, and she says that she's been creating again, and you know, basically that she's been feeling really good about herself and life and the whole the whole thing, and he even tries to give her money, and I think he brings food. Maybe he did he bring food?
SPEAKER_00No, she was making food for him. Oh, right, she was even cooking, she was like, I even made your favorite, like some mix of vegetables with sauce on it, random random vegetables and sauce or something like random overcooked vegetables, yeah, with sauce, and so you remember how I said in the beginning of the series like I hate when like shows make the characters introduce each other in a very cringy way. So we knew that they're brother and sister, right? And so, on top of just already knowing their relationship, fucking Sarah, like in this one scene, like she's really happy. Her and Simon are just like talking, and then they start dancing with music on, and it's a really sweet scene, but then she has to be all like, I love you, older brother, and she literally says it just like that too, and it's so like disgustingly cringy. It's a little awkward, it is awkward, it makes me feel weird, it makes me feel like like stepbrother, you know what I mean? And I almost felt like when I was watching it the second time, knowing that she was gonna say it in like a moany voice, like, you know what I mean, older brother. Like, that's how she says it. I'm just like, I was I was thinking when I was watching, I'm like, is this a like their uh platonic brother-sister relationship?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it I know. I mean, I guess, like, you don't have a brother, I don't have a brother.
SPEAKER_00That's what I was thinking too. I'm like, maybe this is how siblings act, like brother sisters. Yeah, even like Pia and Nick at first, we were like, they have a weird relationship. Maybe that's what brother-sister relationships are right like.
SPEAKER_01I don't know in the writer's world of this show, so you're right.
SPEAKER_00You are right. Yeah, I feel like I need to talk to somebody with like a a sibling of the opposite sex and just be like, Hey, what's your relationship like?
SPEAKER_01And and you can see that he was so protective of her, and like he tries to give her money, and she's like, No, stop. I don't stop trying to give me money, and he's just he just wants to take care of her and make sure she's okay. So after that, I get the impression that he's he set up the spyware less to be a perv and more to just make sure she's okay.
SPEAKER_00And that's what I meant by like caretaker. I feel like Simon is pretty much Sarah's caretaker. She just it she seems very unpredictable, she seems like she's clinically depressed, um, or she she's clinically something, like she maybe she has like bipolar disorder where she like really has like high highs and then like just really low lows, you know. Right.
SPEAKER_01And even in that scene, it was she was portraying her role almost as childlike when she started dancing with him.
SPEAKER_00That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_01Like almost like euphoric, like of a way a toddler would be like, Come on, daddy, or you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Exactly, which makes me think that he's been like, Yeah, and that's and like she's yeah, it she wasn't even trying to like like they could have casted her as like much, much younger, and they didn't like they could have casted her to look like she was like just 18, and they didn't, and it's just weird, but yeah, besides the point, maybe Simon has pretty much been a parent, like she said older brother. That's that's awkward as it was. Yeah, it was like a big indicator of like how he has cared for her. But the thing is, like, as much as it seemed odd to you and I watching, clearly she didn't think there was anything wrong with it, and it didn't look like there was anything inappropriate going on, so yeah, even though the sandman was like acting, yeah, but like why have the character say it like that? Like, if I was the director, if I was Ben Young, right? Ben Young's the director, if I was him, I would have just been like, and cut. Can you not sound like you're in a porno? Thank you, and scene, you know? Like, can you just say that one more time without moaning? Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Like, it would have been so maybe she was she thought she was auditioning for the clickbait porno, which might be coming out soon. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01I just porno coming soon.
SPEAKER_00It's just like there had to be, yeah, no. Seriously, ew. There had to be some kind of creative direction with the way that she said it because I feel like they would have stopped the actress right there, been like, hey, you gotta say this differently. We don't want it being portrayed that way. And that's it. Like this whole series, and we've gone through this before, like this like thought about the series, it's eight episodes. Every single moment has been crafted perfectly. Because this is a one season, as far as we know, eight episodes series. That's it. Right. Why add shit that doesn't matter? Right. Everything's important. And this is like the reason for watching it twice, too, before talking about it. That and I realized the value in that because every tiny little thing is there for a reason. Yeah. Um, before I forget, um, and we'll talk about this at the end of this episode because this matters. That whole thought, like that every little thing matters, made me think about episode one with the girl on the volleyball team that turned around and was like checking out Pia and trying to see like what the commotion was about before people realized that Nick was missing that morning. That's a little detail that we kind of got like a taste of in episode four, episode five, and it hasn't really come back.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that's a good observation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so we'll get to that at the end of the episode again. So, anyway, that was a flashback to six months ago. We get a flashback to now, and so now is after Nick has been found dead, everything like current day, and so I'm sitting in his office, and Daryl starts freaking out. Daryl is his coworker and friend, right? So Daryl's just like freaking out because he's like, Oh my god, did you get my text messages last night? Like, did you see the news? Did you see that like Sarah's text with like with Nick? Well, they don't say Nick, I forgot the name that he called himself. Oh, Jeremy. Yeah. They were like, Did you see that like Sarah's text were at least all over the news? How'd they get that? And Simon's just like the that reporter broke into my apartment and stole her phone.
SPEAKER_01Meddling reporter, and I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for the meddling reporter.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm gonna but even Daryl's like, isn't that illegal? And Simon, excuse you, Ruby, and Simon's just like a buddy, yeah, right? And so um, oh god, and then detective Amiri comes through and he's just like asking this question. They both know what's up, and Daryl, Daryl's just like fuck, and then Simon's like, go home. So Daryl, God bless you.
SPEAKER_01Um Simon plays it off when they're like, come here, he's like like he looks behind him, like who be? Yeah, yeah, motherfucker, like the fucking thing.
SPEAKER_00So stupid, yeah, but uh, but Simon gets questioned basically. And oh wait, no, he doesn't get questioned yet. Well, oh no, question Simon. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I thought. So they they pull Simon to like a side room and they were just asking him, like, where were you on the night of, or where were you on the day of? Um, because your bosses have told us that you took off.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you were on vacation that that day or that week or something like that. So Simon. Yeah, we were fishing.
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh. And they were like, Who's we? And he's like, Me and Daryl. They're like, Do you have Daryl's number? And so they're already aware that Daryl and Nick, not Daryl, Nick, I'm sorry, Daryl and Simon are just like, like, if somebody tells me they had off that day, they're like, Oh, we want fishing. Like, yeah, come on. So luckily, Amir is just aware.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's skeptical.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's not just like and he's like bullshit. Don't answer your phone.
SPEAKER_01No, just don't. It's already after your your antennas or whatever are up. Like, wait a minute, he's acting so sketchy right now. Oh, I was fishing with my buddy Daryl. Daryl, stay the fuck away. Like, what's the case?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he texts him. He was like, when Simon was going back to his desk, he was trying to be all calm, and he was like, Don't answer your phone, don't come back today, don't go home. So weird. Now, immediately you know, like, okay, both of these are like prime sub uh suspects. Like, as the viewer, you're like, okay, sum's up, right? So um, it there's another flashback now with Simon, and it distraught Sarah. And Sarah just looks like a wreck, and she's upset, and she's like, Jeremy's going through some shit, and he's not talking to me. Like, they weren't like she just like alluded to the fact that like they weren't talking to each other anymore, and she was very, very upset about it. And um she just is just like, Why can't I be like everybody else? Why can't I just be happy?
SPEAKER_01So heartbreaking.
SPEAKER_00It really was. She was just like, You can't save me. Like, she literally told her brother, like, you can't save me, which just shows you, like in that scene, which is so sad, like how how low Sarah's lows could be. Yeah, and I don't want to call it something without it actually being something, but it just seemed like her high euphoric, like dancing around and like even participating in activities that she loves, like songwriting that we we know of from the last episode. And she even like made like a clay like pottery thing for her brother and cooking and tidying up, mm-hmm, and like participating in activities like that and having such like a feeling of joy to feeling so low, low saying you can't save me is just it just shows you Sarah's like emotional, like I don't even want to say emotional well-being. There is no well-being there. No, she was suffering, yeah, and she was crying, and um then we see like a scene. I it must have been like the day after or two days after. Uh Simon and Daryl like smoking in the stairwell at their job, they're just bullshitting about fucking like flat earth or some dumb shit. And yeah, Daryl's like, Well, if the earth was flat, we would roll up. No, he's like, If well, I believe in flat earth because if it was round, wouldn't you just roll off? Which, like, fucking Daryl, I don't like him.
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't it be the opposite? Uh yeah, because I was getting wound to listen to that conversation again, and I'm like, wait, does Daryl not believe in gravity either? Because gravity is what holds us down on this round earth, you know, even like even for the really dumb asses, like that is not solid logic. I could I could almost grant you like if it was flat, we'd fall off. Because think about a table, yeah. You know, but um no.
SPEAKER_00No, he was like in he was in favor of flat earth and saying, well, if the earth wasn't flat, right wouldn't and like it's round, like people are saying, even though he doesn't believe in it, right? That's what he was saying, which is like I just don't like the way that like Daryl talks throughout this episode just really makes me want to like kick him in the face, which foreshadowing, but anyway. Um so okay, so they're smoking in the stairwell talking about flat earth, dumb shit, and then Simon gets a call, he answers the call, and it's Sarah crying on the phone, and she's like, I'm sorry. Um, I'm so sorry, and then it's like an empty line, like an open line, and Simon starts bolting and he bolts from work to her apartment, busts open through the door because like she had it locked, he kicked it open, and he finds Sarah. And they don't we don't see this in the episode, but it's just probably better. It is better. Um, after you see him go like around the corner from like the kitchen to like I guess her bedroom, yeah, and you hear him screaming no. Um, then you see the body bag come out.
SPEAKER_01And it's so crazy how you could go from this scene and and just like your heart is breaking, not just for Sarah, but but for him, because he he obviously loved her so much, and he and he all he w all he wanted to do was take care of her, you know. That's his sister, and he loved her, and that was his family, yeah. Yeah, well, he doesn't count, but you know, like you just feel so bad for him, and then 10 minutes later in the episode, you're like this piece of shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it so it seems like the same day, like Daryl, like um, not Daryl. Simon was just trying to like calm his nerves. He sees Sarah's phone, he starts going through it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because it was in the couch when the emergency response people came in, and he noticed it and he grabs it before they can get it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and he starts going through like her dating app messages, and it's the messages that we saw at the end of the last episode. And he turns his face with his mouth open like holy fucking shit. And you could see, like, it's almost how do I describe it? It's almost like you know, when you shake a soda bottle that has like a cap on it, and you're watching all like the carbonation like fill up, and you know that that cap is about to explode, but it hasn't exploded yet. That was literally like facial expression on Simon. Like you see, his emotions are building up, but it's happening so fast, and he's so in shock that all you see is just like a jaw drop, but you know like what's building up behind him. So he sees the conversation with Jeremy, he's caught up with what we're caught up with, um, even though this is a flashback. So um with sorry, with Simon now a suspect in Nick's murder. Uh Simon practices his alibi with Daryl.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but hold on, because back in um Oakland, Pia is at Sophie's house and she notices that all the pictures of Nick are gone.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that happens first.
SPEAKER_01Oops, that that happens, yeah. I think that happens before this because Pia gets really pissed off because all the pictures are gone, and Matt is there and they're having dinner, and Sophie is saying that she asked Matt to help take down all the pictures, and Pia gets really pissed off, and I'm not sure why she was in the other room, but then basically she leaves and grabs a picture on her way out and was like, and you forgot what okay.
SPEAKER_00So Sophie walks away to another room and she follows Sophie, and I think it was like the guest bedroom because she's like, Have you been sleeping here? Because it didn't look like they're a bedroom from when Sophie and Nick were having like that confrontation. Yes, but Sophie said that she was cheating on him. It didn't look like it was the same room. That's the way that Pia asked the question. Yeah, and so um I think what their conversation was about pretty much was like you saw those text messages too. And so that's kind of like Sophie's mindset throughout this whole episode. Like, she's still like a distraught widow, and as this episode goes on, she's so like open to the fact of or not even open, she's empathetic with Simon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, in a sense, and so like later on to be realistic because she's like whatever happened happened, and I still have kids to raise. So the the faster I accept facts, the faster we can move on, and you know, I can I don't remember what her words were, but something to that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because the kids' phones keep buzzing, they're like people are texting us. I think reporters are texting us. So um, so that was their conversation. Um, Pia also is like trying to stalk um Simon and Daryl like on their Facebooks or social media, and she's seeing the same picture that actually uh Detective Amiri is finding, which is like the picture on the day that Nick went missing of Daryl and Simon catching a fish. Like they literally posted that on their Facebook as their alibis, which was like so lame. And Pia calls it out too. Like she was talking to Amiri on the phone. But this is this is later. Oh, this doesn't happen right after.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I'm fucked up.
SPEAKER_01Okay, at least I think it's later because she gets in her car and she starts heading to Sacramento. Not yet. Not yet. Are you sure? I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00Okay, but I thought they had a conversation on the phone about Yeah, she calls well she calls him and Because Pia calls Detective Amiri while he's questioning Simon originally. Right, but he doesn't answer, and no, and so immediately after is when I thought they had the conversation, like after Simon's flashback.
SPEAKER_01I'm pretty sure that was in person because when she's driving and Sophie calls her, and she's like, Well, I'm just out for a drive to clear my head, and then Pia shows up and he's like, and she's got she's at the hotel and she's got beer, and he's like, How did you find yeah, yeah, and she's like, Well, I do, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I'm pretty sure she like checked out all the motels.
SPEAKER_01It I guess it doesn't even matter whether it was on the phone or in person, but you're right, she does and she tells him that how is it that all of his social media is politics and ranting about like dumb bullshit, and then it's like he posts like one selfie, like the day the day that Nick went missing, right?
SPEAKER_00And then the last selfie he posts was like months, like months and months or like years ago. So, like, this is on his normal content. What would make him post that photo? And Mary's like, Yeah, I noticed that too. So, like, he's on the same page, like he he's seeing through the alibi that Simon is making for himself and Daryl, even though he's not speaking, um, or they didn't question him quite yet.
SPEAKER_01That way, wait, but let's but let's go back to the hotel room. So, yeah, that's a when she gets there, he you know, opens the door for her, lets her in the room.
SPEAKER_00Wait, right before we finish, did we talk about Simon and Daryl practicing there alibi, or should we talk about that after? Because I think that happens before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we can talk about that after. Okay, I mean like right after the scene, yeah, yeah, yeah. And um, yeah, and so then she goes inside and and he's like, I think was this when he says I don't drink, and she's like, I do, and she starts drinking, and then he's like, Well, is there something else you want to do?
SPEAKER_00And in that moment when I was watching it, I went, Oh shit, and they kiss like a really like steamy kiss, and then he pulls away and he's like, This can't happen because like what did he say?
SPEAKER_01He was like, Oh, yeah, because uh the job would find out, and she's like, Well, how would they find out?
SPEAKER_00And he's like, Because I think no, she like he was like, he was like, We can't do this, like somebody's gonna find out, and as PSDS said it, I said it when we were when I was watching it, and I was just like, How would they know? Because she said it the exact same way, so we said it at the same time, and I was like, Oh, drink's case, and he was like, Because I would tell them, and I was just stupid.
SPEAKER_01Oh, they're both single, you you're there where nobody knows you in a hotel room. Is this like at this point, is this really gonna compromise the integrity of the operation of the investigation?
SPEAKER_00I don't think so, but this made me think maybe Detective Amiri still considers Pia a suspect.
SPEAKER_01I guess I get that.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, or he's guilty of something himself. This is what I was thinking about the second time when I was watching. I was like, why is he separating himself so far from her if he feels like he's so close?
SPEAKER_01But I think it'll could also be that he he's wanted this so much to be in that department, in the homicide department, uh-huh. And I think that it could also be he doesn't want to take any chances with fucking up, yeah, you know, any anything that could bring him back down and and jeopardize his position there.
SPEAKER_00So that's true, and P already is holding blackmail above him, so maybe he just felt like it wasn't the best choice.
SPEAKER_01He's like, This bitch is crazy and I love it, but we gotta wait.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. But that scene was just like wow, like that definitely was just like a big arc in their relationship. But going back to um Simon and Daryl practicing their alibi, um, Simon has to literally tell Daryl what kind of fish they caught, and then Daryl keeps fucking it up like Daryl does. Yeah, and he's like, No, it's spring, no, it's fall. I forgot what they said, but yeah, and Daryl turns around and says, you know, I could just tell them what you did. And I was just like, What a fucking little narc. Although, like, I mean, if if something had transpired and Daryl's alibi, or not even alibi, his um his statement to the police would have been like it 100%, it would have chucked out because anyway, I don't want to I don't want to spoil anything while we're talking.
SPEAKER_01It just seems very such a shitty thing. It really was I was just like if you lie, I'm gonna swear to it. If you say, Listen, I need you to bring a shovel, I'm gonna be like, How many? And where?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, don't say I could just rat you out, unless or I could just tell them what happened.
SPEAKER_01Like one of my kids, I don't I don't see how I wouldn't have your back, which is probably a really shitty thing to say in public, right? Like, yeah, no problem, I'll get the shovel, we'll bury the body, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Simon like goes A-WOL on him though, and like starts choking him. Hell yeah, you're not gonna do that, and like I was really proud of Simon that moment, which is weird because like now you feel like you're siding with murderers, right?
SPEAKER_01Because now you're back to feeling for the guy. Yeah, this episode is like a fucking roller coaster of emotion for Simon.
SPEAKER_00It's like another Emma Burton episode with Simon Beasley, like you just oh, did I say Emma Burton? Who the fuck am I? I don't know. Oh, I don't know where I am anymore. Emma Beasley, yeah. I still like her. I wonder if she's gonna come back. Okay, I had my suspicions, but anyway. So so that's pretty much like the page that Simon and Daryl are on. That's the page that P is on, and that's the page that Detective Amiri's on. So we we start getting a little bit more flashbacks at this point because Detective Amiri is planning on visiting Simon the next day. He has suspicions that he was gonna leave town because he told him specifically not to leave town.
SPEAKER_01He kind of just like was um like planting that seed for him to do the opposite of at his as at his apartment early in the morning, and he's got a suitcase that we've seen him pack. Yeah, and yeah, Amiri is like, Yeah, okay, I knew this motherfucker.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so as he's packing, as Simon's packing his suitcase the nice oh my god, the night before.
SPEAKER_01Um 11 o'clock on the clock. I don't yeah, I don't know if that might be important later, but it was 11 o'clock.
SPEAKER_00Oh shit. Okay, so um maybe it is, but he um Simon catches eye of like that memory box that he has under his bed that Ben Park found. So anyway. Wait, Ben Park? Ben Young? Ben Young's the director, Ben Park's the character. Yeah, they they've been using the same names. They do, and look, I'm already confused enough.
SPEAKER_01I'm like me and my like seven brain cells here. Yeah, to get to know the characters that well, so you gotta you gotta drop us a bone here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm talking about like Emma Burton. Like, is isn't Emma Burton one of the Spice girls? Isn't that Baby Spice?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I think her name is Emma, but I don't know her language. I thought it was Emma Burton. Wait, somebody's Emma Burton. It's button, and I was right. Okay, you're right. Oh no, it is Burton. No, it's button. That's baby spice from Spice Curl.
SPEAKER_01So next girlfriend is not a spice girl. No. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. If she was a spice girl, would she be like, um if you're having a good time if you're having a good time. Mistress Spice. Or low self-confidence spice. Oh my god, Mistress Spice.
SPEAKER_01She said, tell me what you want, what you really, really want. And he said, to have all the girls and all the apps.
SPEAKER_00And she said she's like, but I thought we were gonna get married. No bitch. I see a whole time. Oh, anyway, anyway. We fell off the track.
SPEAKER_01Um I need wine. I'm like sweating here from laughing in my green room over here. Greenhouse. Fucking hot bugs. This goddamn room is so cold in the winter that literally, if you leave liquid, it will freeze in here. And then the sun was out for today, and it's gotta be about 85 degrees in here. And here I am wearing a long sleeve shirt. Oh my god. Fuck an idiot.
SPEAKER_00We have to focus. Oh, so where were we? Yeah. Um we're talking about we were up to when in the morning when Rashawn corners Simon leaving his apartment. Okay, yeah. So Simon walks out with this briefcase. He's like, Oh, I'm dropping this off at uh Goodwill, right? Like fucking dumb fucking excuse. And um Detective Marys with like uh San Francisco PD and like one police officer, and they're like, Oh, okay, well, you know what? Um, come with us. You could drop it off on the way. We're gonna go to the police station. We just gotta get you in for like some questioning. And he's like, Oh, but I'm also running late for work, so I'm gonna take my own car. And he's like, But I'll follow you guys, and he's like, Okay, stay close. And you you already know Damiri's like, this is gonna be a hunt, this is gonna be a chase. Like, let's go. And so he tells the police officer, the San Francisco PD that he's with, he's like, Stay close, and the guy's like, ah, yeah, you're like something cringy like that. Yeah, and um, like the way that he responded made me feel like this was this guy's first acting job, and he was so excited to say more than like a grunt or something. Like he had words and he was excited about it, and he put all his emotion, like it was weird, but anyway, um Simon starts following the car, stops the car, puts it in reverse, starts backing up, and Mary sees this, and he's like, Oh my god! And so they start going after Simon. He kind of like reverses his car and makes it uh like horizontal, so that's why it's like blocking off the police car, and then he starts running on foot.
SPEAKER_01What I was surprised at though is that they wanted Simon to follow them instead of the other way around.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, me too. But I guess so that's why they can um like put on the sirens and like um what is that called?
SPEAKER_01No, like have a I an escort? Yeah, like an escort. It's not that serious. Like I can't imagine that they would need an escort just to go to the police station to ask questions. Not sure it just it just seemed like a dumb idea to be like sure, follow us. And and then he's like, stay close, but you were in front. Unless the plan was to let him get in front, but how is he gonna get in front when you were in front?
SPEAKER_00It it just it just didn't maybe they were gonna pull over and let him like lead the way, but it seems like when Simon backed up, there was no like out that way, and the police car was blocking like the exit entrance. I'm gonna say, so maybe the police car had to come out first. That's true. It only made sense. They I don't think they were planning on like Simon really taking his car, and when they realized that was the only way to get him out, they were like, Okay, like fine. But I think like a mirroring the whole time, he was like, he was like, Well, I need my car, so so I can like have a way to get home from work, right? Right. Because they were like, We'll just drive you to work. Everybody knows what's going on. It doesn't matter that you're gonna be late, they know you're involved in like something bigger than moderating, uh not moderating, oh fuck, what's the word? Going through like videos, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so at the same time that that's happening, then like you said, he takes off running, they chase him, and then they they finally catch up to him, and he's got nowhere to go, so he's arrested. Yeah, while that's happening, Pia shows up at Clawness because I guess her her goal was to catch Simon showing up to work. I guess she didn't realize that Detective Amiri was going to his apartment. And as she's there, she notices Daryl.
SPEAKER_00And yeah, and he locks eyes with her. Uh he's gonna be awesome. And he's and we know this. We know that he knows who Pia is, but we didn't speak about right.
SPEAKER_01When they were going to the computer looking at his profiles, she came up and he's like, Oh, that's his sister.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so it didn't take Daryl and Simon very long after Simon broke into his sister's phone after she passed away. It didn't take him long to Google information that he knew about Jeremy because Jeremy said something to Sarah.
SPEAKER_01Jeremy is taking her to a volleyball game. I forgot the name of the team.
SPEAKER_00The um Oakland, they're in Oakland, right? Mm-hmm. So the Oakland Lynx, L-Y-N-X, like the animal, that's his team at the college that he's at. And so, like, okay, if somebody, if like if somebody says I'm into women's volleyball, and it's like a man, like it I don't want to like make stereotypes at all. I don't want to say that everybody can't love anything they want, but that's kind of like a little bit of a red flag, unless you're in the field. Yeah, that's why it's not like a red flag, and like, hey, somebody did something wrong. It's just like, oh, women's volleyball specifically, why not just all volleyball? And so when he said that, it was really easy for them to be like, oh, let's just Google, like, and boom, there's this. Yeah, and it's the same picture that we see on the article in um the last episode where one of the girls from the team is talking to Ben. Like they see like that um that like team photo with the coaches, like Matt and Nicker in the photo. Yeah, and so they look underneath in the caption to the photo, and it literally says Nick Brewer, and they're like, Oh shit. They Google Nick Brewer, they find his Facebook, they're going through, they see Sophie, they see the kids, and then they see a photo of Nick and Pia, and they stop on it and they're like, Oh, isn't he pretty? And Daryl goes and she's pretty too, referencing Pia. This is also the scene where they um they show like the actual kidnapping of Nick. So now we definitely know that Nick was kidnapped by Daryl and Simon. And so they're in the van.
SPEAKER_01The van that we all know it happens on the trail is exactly the way they um like the um the evidence is like showing. Yeah, so why was I stupid? No, no, that's a couple of being hold on, yeah. That's the answer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, like everything that Miri was saying, like, oh, it looks like there was a struggle, like everything that the team has deciphered through the evidence that they found. Like it's verbatim, you know. So the syringe that they find in the woods, not far off from like where they find his bike, and like the the scene where he was kidnapped, like the syringe is literally used by Simon as Nick turns around. Like Nick's on his biking trail because they already know like his routine. And um, Simon and Daryl standing outside like the van, they're like, Oh, like our fan broke down. Can we use your cell phone? Mm-hmm. And like immediately you could tell that Nick already knows like this is a weird situation. He's like, Oh, rats. Like my phone.
SPEAKER_01But also because they they made it worse. So because there um Simon is hesitating, and then Daryl's going, Are you gonna do with me?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I fucking hate Daryl. I really do. He's so cringy, and Nick immediately knows something's up, goes to turn around on his bike. Which I'm sorry, if you realize you're in danger, aren't you just gonna turn around and start running, or do you pick up your whole bike, move your body the 180 degrees to turn around and then start kicking off really slow? Like he didn't, he didn't.
SPEAKER_01I know, or at the very least, go straight and don't take the time to turn your bike.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Just like dodge them, go super fast. If you feel like you're in danger, don't turn your bike the 180 degrees while you're still standing on it, you fucking idiot. And then Simon injects. But yeah, yeah, you're right.
SPEAKER_01But like, but yeah, no dumb nick shit.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it was some dumb nick shit. He was like, My bike, but I I don't know. It it was just like Simon got him very, very easily. There was no struggle with um it didn't seem like there was a struggle with Nick getting away, at least after like before the syringe, because as soon as he's injected with whatever's in there, um the scene cuts, and but you know he had to be down, yeah. He never was because when whatever, honestly, like when he wakes up, he's in the van.
SPEAKER_01And he's like groggy, and he's yeah, and and at that point you see he's tied up, and this is where it picks up from the first episode where he's in that scene.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and um Simon seems upset but hesitant about the kidnapping, and Daryl's totally into it, like really fucking into it. And so the first two signs, Simon makes Nick right, and the third sign, the one that says I killed him.
SPEAKER_01But the whole time Nick is protesting, and oh yeah, no, he's like you have the wrong person, you have the wrong guy, and they're just they're just continuing, like, no, we don't do this.
SPEAKER_00It's so weird, it really is. Um, we obviously know that Nick was talking to Sarah, or actually, we know that Nick was talking to Emma. We know that Nick was on some dating apps.
SPEAKER_01There was no way too smitten, that's the name of it. Yeah, the dating app.
SPEAKER_00Too smitten. Yeah, oh my god. I mean, look, there is evidence in episode four, right? The mistress of Nick cheating on Sophie, Nick seeing other women, Nick doing things with other women, right? Being in relationships, saying I love you. Like he was doing these things with other women. In this part of the episode, you start to learn that you actually don't know if it was Nick who was in a relationship with Sarah.
SPEAKER_01But what makes you say that?
SPEAKER_00The fact that Nick was able to point out that the picture of him and Sarah at the beach, which was similar to him and Emma at the beach, which was similar to him and Sophie at the beach, which is what he originally says. He's like, No, I know that photo of me. It's me at the beach with my wife. Somebody like cut her out and put like Sarah there. Look, the horizons don't even line up, and whoever photoshopped it did a shitty job because they're right, like the ocean horizon in the background doesn't line up, it doesn't make sense, which made me think like, hey, um, do you think that somebody maybe who was around Nick took his phone and manipulated somebody else? I mean, did do we even know if Sarah and Jeremy it could have been Matt. Matt's on the table right now for me. What if when they were on their business trips?
SPEAKER_01Okay, but hold that thought for now. Hold that thought. Yeah. Let's let's hold that and go back to the parking lot with Piacea. Because this is where she sees Darryl and they lock eyes, and then a van comes in between them, and when it leaves, he's gone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this van's like doing a K-turn or some shit in between them. And while he's sitting in his car and she's standing outside her car, like leaving a voicemail for Amiri saying that she's going into his job to talk to Simon in person because she wants answers. This is when she confronts Daryl in the parking lot. The car backs up in the middle of them when the car drives forward. Simon's not there anymore. I mean, um, Daryl's not there anymore, and it turns out, yeah, it turns out he got out of his car right and was hiding floor.
SPEAKER_01And then he comes after her. But like, how do you not hear the footsteps? I know that's because he wasn't sneaking up, I mean, he was just straight up walking, but he bolts.
SPEAKER_00But this is yeah, this is where like you see how sloppy he is, too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, he tries to hold her at gunpoint, but she gets away.
SPEAKER_00Because there's his fucking co-workers in the parking lot. She's like, Hey Daryl, what's up? And he's like, uh, none much. And then Pia like had her keys or must have had like a pocket knife or something. She goes to slash him across the face. He turns around as another car is coming through this lot, hits Daryl, not too hard, but he rolls and then he falls on the floor and he's unable to get up for a few seconds. And Pia yells to the coworker that said hi. Pia yells, he has a gun, call the police, or something like that. Right. And um Pia runs to her car and Daryl yells, like, I'm gonna kill you. Way to go, Daryl. Sloppy motherfucker. Yeah, what a sloppy one. Yep. Daryl's fucking as and as this is happening, so I mean it's now on like a foot chase, or um well, well, detective Mary's on a foot chase with Simon. Well, he gets caught. He does, he gets arrested at the dead end. Yeah, that scene where they were like, put your hands behind your head. Um, and he's flashing back to like his sister and their good memories together was really sad. Um Simon Simon gives in. We see Simon at the police station while Amiri's questioning him. He gets a call that um from like one of his co-workers comes in, like somebody else on the team, they're like, She's here, and we know she means Pia. Um so um Pia is in, Detective Amiri is trying to make sure she's okay because they know what happened with Daryl. Daryl's in for questioning, too. And uh Detective Amiri's like, just calm down, it's okay. Like, you're okay now. I'm gonna drive you home. And then before that, he goes back into the interrogation room to tell Simon, like, hey, look, like Daryl's talking, he's saying a lot of shit, he's saying you did it. And Simon goes, I want to talk to her, I want to talk to the sister.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because he did he tell him at that point, or was it just a flashback at that point?
SPEAKER_00It was a flashback at that point.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah. So then when he talks this to Pia, he well, she tells him basically that she knows what it's like to have a brother, and that no matter what, at the end of it, it he's still dead. Like your sibling is still dead, and you accomplished nothing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, her her um like leveling with Simon was really sad. It what she said hit really, really hard, and anybody who's ever lost anybody close to them can really feel from what she said. She said something like, and the memories that you two share that nobody knows about, they're only yours now. Yeah, it was just like, oh my god, that hurts. That hurt me as a viewer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And this is also where we find out that the trauma that they shared was their father committing suicide.
SPEAKER_00And they found him, and they found him. Pia and Nick found their father. And Pia said it really fucked him up. Like it really fucked Nick up.
SPEAKER_01Right. So then Simon basically tells her that yeah, he kidnapped him, but he didn't kill that, he didn't kill him.
SPEAKER_00No, because what happens is that after Simon, I mean after Nick convinces Simon that, like, hey, like the picture's not right, Simon jumps outside the van, closes the van door, and when the um what's it called? When the video hits like the five million views, yeah, Dow with a bunk hole, like, yeah, kill him, kill him.
SPEAKER_01He's like, Beavis and button, kill him, kill him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, handing him the gun. He's like, You ready? Are you excited? He's like, Oh, uh, he said some other shit earlier too. When um he was writing on the thing, like I killed a woman, uh, I killed a woman, like right before he wrote on the poster board to hand to Nick. He goes, Let's make this shit viral, and then he wrote, like, I killed a woman. It was just like, oh my god, this fucking isn't somebody a clonist gonna be like delete.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00That's what I was thinking the whole time too. Like, what a fucking coincidence! Like, who's monitoring this website? Obviously, no one. Oh, which is why he knew exactly where to upload it, right?
SPEAKER_01I guess.
SPEAKER_00I mean that's yeah, no, Simon knew. Simon works in this field, he knew. But anyway, so um, sorry, but it's okay. Daryl gets what he deserves because as soon as Daryl opens up the van door, Nick is there. Nick freed himself because he like found like an exacto knife, um, like in somebody's backpack that they left on the floor in the van. Um, he kicks Daryl in the face and Daryl falls to the floor. And it's it's almost as if he's paralyzed for like five minutes.
SPEAKER_01And even Simon is kind of like, I don't know what to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and Nick gets out like very, very slowly, very cautiously, holding the exacto knife, but not not trying to run away that much at all. Like he's being very cautious in the situation. Um, Simon still has the gun.
SPEAKER_01I mean, Simon still has a gun.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then Simon starts running after Nick, and they're running. Nick falls, Nick drops the knife, and he's just like kind of sitting there on the floor looking up at Simon, holding the gun at him. And Nick does a good job convincing Simon to let him know what he does.
SPEAKER_01He tells him it wasn't him, he's got the wrong person, and he only told one person one person about the affair, and he promises he'll make them pay.
SPEAKER_00Um so he's like, Whoever did this to your sister, I'll find them and I'll make them pay.
SPEAKER_01And so Simon basically lets him go, and Nick runs off.
SPEAKER_00And that's what Simon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he he tells them that and he's like, I don't know who killed him. Like, I let him go.
SPEAKER_00He said to Pia, I got the wrong guy, which was so heartbreaking. Pia backs up into the wall of the interrogation room, and she's just shell-shocked, and um Amirius cut her out. Yeah, I mean, he had balls for doing what he did. Um, I don't want to say it was justified at all, but I can empathize with his feelings of anger, I can empathize with his feelings of sadness. I just can't agree with what he did. Although he did come to reason with what he was doing by letting Nick go, but now we still don't know who killed Nick. And so you think the whole time. Oh, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01Wait, hold on. No, no, no. At some point before the episode ends, and I forgot what the context of the messages were, but we see Ethan back on his computer. Oh, yeah, talking to Al 2005. Yeah, we do. So now that computer person is back, is back, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you said it would be, and I'm so happy it is because the computer person was must have asked, like, um, what happened with the news story?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like Ethan me something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and Ethan was like, nothing, nothing happened yet, but I think they caught the guy. And then Ethan's like, Thank you so much for always being here for me. And the next episode, because this is where this episode ends, the next episode's titled The Sun, and it's about Ethan, which is so weird. Because I didn't think he had that big of a role in his father's disappearance and murder. I wonder if like the AAL 2005 is Emma, and Emma was just really, really good at um pretending like she was a different Emma, you know what I mean? And she's like the one who like maybe when Nick was in the shower one day, she was on Nick's phone and saw he was still on dating apps and talking to people. Maybe he matched with Sarah, and then she hacked into his account and then did all that with Sarah and Photoshopped that photo. And I don't know what her motive would be behind it though.
SPEAKER_01But it's just really like your theories.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I mean, like Emma was there, Emma was gone. This is an eight-episode series. Everything's so important. What's her bigger role? Look, she like gave us an interview. She gave us other people who were in relationships with Nick, like the artist from LA and the the unknown person, which could have been Sarah, honestly. But what else is Emma's purpose? What else is Matt's purpose? I don't know. I feel like it's one of them. I really feel like it was. I don't think Pia did this. I think Amiri's kind of being weird. I think Sophie doesn't have anything to do with this. Ruby doesn't. Not my dog. I'm talking about Sophie's mom.
SPEAKER_01Um I didn't think the dog had anything to do with it.
SPEAKER_00No, she was just sleeping on my lap again. But she's curious too. Like, I really think Emma and Matt's stories don't check out, and I don't understand why from the beginning we don't know their full alibis. Or like, especially Matt, we don't know his full alibi.
SPEAKER_01Well, Matt, um, Nick said that he only told one person about the affair. And probably Matt. He was, it seemed as though he was off to confront them. We don't know where he went.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, what if it was Matt in the van? So another thing that happens in this episode that we don't know um really like how much about was that oh okay, this is what happened. When Pia was driving to San Francisco, she gets a call from Sophie. Pia sounds like she's drunk on the phone with Sophie, but otherwise, um, Sophie's telling her that, like, hey, I need to go into the right. Um, Sophie said, hey, Pia, like, I'm going into the police station tomorrow for questioning. And Pia's like, about what? And Sophie said they have a still image of the person who ran Emma Beasley off the road, and Pia needs to go in to identify him. And Pia goes, Oh, it's a him. And then Sophie's like, Yeah, so what are you doing? And Pia's like, nothing. I just needed to go for a drive. And so immediately it makes you think, like, was Pia the one who ran the person off the road? Maybe she was wearing a hat and they thought it was a guy because she has short hair. But they never show, like, in that second, in that moment. We don't see that part of the episode though, with Sophie going in. But in that moment, they really should have showed like a drone footage, like backing away from Pia's car as she's driving it to San Francisco, showing what kind of car it was. That would have been amazing. And for it to be that green van, that would have been really, really cool.
SPEAKER_01Maybe that's why they didn't show it.
SPEAKER_00Maybe because even when she parks at the motel, you don't see her car.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because she's already just standing there waiting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it would make sense why Pia didn't pick up the phone for Emma when Emma was calling her that she felt like she was in danger because Pia was the one conducting and orchestrating that. It could have been it. But like, I don't know. I don't know. Maybe like it it makes sense for it to be Pia. It just makes sense for it also to be Matt, too, because Emma and Matt had that um like not confrontation, but they they had like a discussion earlier, and Matt realized who Emma was. And like just like Pia said, it's not hard to find out where you're staying. You said you're staying in this hotel. It takes two seconds to call up and figure out what room you're staying in.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't know. I feel like Pia did do some shit, um, but I feel like Matt's really guilty and Emma's really guilty. And I'm wondering if maybe neighboring cahoots at some point too. I feel like there's a lot that's really gonna be pieced together, but I really feel like Ethan was in a position where he was manipulated. I don't feel like Ethan, as of right now, I don't feel like Ethan did anything to contribute to his father's death, besides if he was manipulated by somebody online who is maybe holding some kind of uh blackmail against him. That's the only thing. So, like if the person online was like, I want you to go into your dad's email right now, and I want you to tell us his location on like find my friends or something.
SPEAKER_01Right, because actually that's been a big part of this series with them finding each other through the app. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00So I could see Ethan being manipulated in that way, but doing anything specific or deliberate to harm his father, I don't know, unless he knew about the fact that his mom cheated on his dad, and maybe he thought it was vice versa and he was upset. But he's a kid, like he's 17.
SPEAKER_01Do you have any yes, 16, 17? Do you have any predictions about the next episode?
SPEAKER_00Being that the next episode is the son I think that we're going to see an online presence manipulating him. I think we're gonna see him being stalked. I think we're gonna see him being afraid to say anything. And um I feel like maybe we're gonna see Vincent in this episode.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like they go to the same high school, they're from the same town, they're around the same age.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, these white fucking people towns where everybody goes to the same high school.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's so different than like how we grew up in New York City. Where right? There were all these high schools and you got to pick which one you went to. And now it's like, oh no, you live in this town, you go here. That's it.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I think your town literally has like one high school.
SPEAKER_01One, yeah, yeah. And it's technically not even in the town that I live in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you don't live in any small town, for there'd be only one high school.
SPEAKER_01No, it's it's I mean big compared to you know, but yeah. We gotta talk about Nick and his dumb shit. Uh no more West Brooklyn and West Staten Island. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And no more off the rails. Uh no. He uh I feel like he did do some shit that put him in some situation. But I just yeah, I just feel like maybe he didn't really have much to do with Sarah. Maybe he initially matched with her, but then somebody like hacked into his account and manipulated Sarah. I mean, people who manipulate people know what type of people to feed on, and maybe she just seemed like someone to feed on, or someone to easily like um manipulate. That that's pretty much what I mean. And so maybe maybe he didn't have anything to do with Sarah. This is so weird. I mean, like the whole thing, the whole common like thing in this show is that we don't really know Nick's personality. So to say that something is so Nick of him, we can't do because we don't know who Nick is.
SPEAKER_01We only know from what we're told about him. And aside from some scattered flashbacks, this is this is one of the first scenes. I mean, aside from the first episode, right, where he's just trying to kind of keep the peace, but this is one of the first scene, the first episodes where we actually see more of him in quote unquote real time.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I know it's still a flashback, but it's yeah, no, we see him talking and expressing his personality because anything else that we're given, it so many different opinions and so many different perspectives, or he's being from people's perspective. Yeah, what about that flashback that Pia had of him? Where Nick was like, Oh, I gotta tell you stuff. Like when we were smoking on the bench, right? He was being super coy with her, and so Nick really hasn't given us anything for us to decipher who he is. So it's really hard to say, like, oh, that's a typical Nick personality trait, manipulating people, because we don't know if he's a manipulator. We just know the fact that after his wife had told him that she cheated on someone with on him, he was angry but not so angry. Um easily forgiving. But yeah, he was hurt in such a way that he did it like he uh he it was like he was taking revenge on his wife without her knowing. I that's what we know about Nick. We know he was definitely with Emma, like we see that in Emma's flashbacks, but maybe she's just remembering things that didn't happen. I don't know. Who knows if she's just like psychotic and she created these memories and fed them to us? Could be like maybe maybe what she was remembering, like waking up in bed, maybe this was all making her coffee. Maybe it was Pia's dream. Oh, don't let this be a dream theory. Oh no. But maybe she's just sitting in a padded room with like locks up around her arms and she's fantasizing about all this because she saw like a picture of him on the news. You remember when Pia, excuse me. You remember when Pia was like maybe she was talking to like Sophie or like Detective Mary or something about the reason for Emma coming to town. I think she actually said it to Emma's face. She's like, I don't know if you get off on this shit. Meaning, yeah, yeah, people, yeah. So maybe maybe she just happened to catch the news and she grew attached to somebody she doesn't know and she fantasized his whole life about him. I don't know. The more I'm talking about Emma, the more I'm just like that sly little fuck. What does she do? All right, but I don't want to blame things on my favorite character so far.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think I think that this this is a wrap for this episode because you're going down all these rabbit holes. And and while it's very entertaining, I don't have to stop you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I hope shit kind of hits the fan in episode seven, the sun, but I know that it's gonna kind of be like episode six where you think you know what's happening, and at the end, it's like, what the fuck? Like I thought I knew this was happening, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And episode. Once he started confessing, you're like, Oh, that's it. That's it.
SPEAKER_00Like until the whole last two minutes, I was convinced that Daryl either killed Nick or Simon actually did it. I really thought, like, this whole episode, seeing Daryl, like that maybe he got sugar happy.
SPEAKER_01Can we rule that out though? We don't know what happened to Nick after he ran away.
SPEAKER_00You're right. You can't rule that out.
SPEAKER_01I mean, he only got kicked in the face. Maybe I. Yeah. Next episode. Yeah, let's stop. Episode seven, the penultimate episode of the series. The sun. Uh meet you, I'll meet you back here for more crazy theories in about a week.
SPEAKER_00I bet I'm gonna have so many of them. Oh my god, I can't wait. Me too. I'm so excited. I get to watch this tonight and then text you at like one in the morning and be like, oh no, he didn't.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's when I get up to.
SPEAKER_01So we'll we'll pick that up in the morning. Yeah. Um, but yeah, I'm I'm so excited for you to watch the next episode, though. We're so close to the end. I know. I think about the show a lot.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, what have I done to you? No, no, it's okay. I mean, look, in like our our culture now of like, oh, we could binge whatever we want whenever we want. Now I have rules. Like, I have to only watch one episode a week, and I could watch it as many times as I want, but I can't just watch the whole thing at once, which is right, it's like back in the stone age of TV. I know the thing is is that I like it because this is what's making me excited. This is a show that I'm going to remember for a long time, not because of like us talking about it, but because of the fact that I like had built up animosity about like watching every episode or like anxiety about what was gonna happen.
SPEAKER_01But as long as it's in a positive context.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it is in a positive context. Okay, it's just like how this is why you remember. No, this is why you remember friends so much from watching it originally because you watched one episode a week or like anything else you watched on TV. Yeah, you know, yeah, so I'm I'm just really happy that I'm having like an authentic experience that doesn't really exist anymore.
SPEAKER_01Okay, good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I miss this. I grew up with this, and then Netflix came out, and nobody did this anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that note, yeah, it's bedtime.
SPEAKER_00I thought I it is bedtime.
SPEAKER_01I'm ooh, ooh, I'm almost done with my this is my and this is my second glass, even though what do you call the big bottles? The magnum? Is that what you call them? Oh my god, no, but I love that.
SPEAKER_00I was just gonna say I don't think so. I was just gonna call it a big boy, but okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, after I'm done with this, I'm like halfway through the bottle and I bought it today. Oh my god, Lisa. I've been sipping on my wine, but just because you can't, yeah, go easy because you're still recovering, so yes, I'm just I'm just a train wreck. It's okay.
SPEAKER_00No, it's okay. We love this.
SPEAKER_01On that note, it's okay.
SPEAKER_00All we need right now is just for our viewers to please go to buy me a cup of coffee. Oh, so that's why Lisa can buy not a cup of coffee, but her Magnum wine.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and maybe some like thinko blobo. So I don't forget any more funerals. Oh, oh my god. Do you remember in my old apartment when you open the cabinets and I would have like sticky notes notes to myself? Yeah, because I need reminders.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah. We will see you. We will talk to you. We'll be here next week.

Good pods. That's what I was thinking of when I said Spotify first. One click, that's it. Yeah, not a big deal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know what to do. Don't make the drunk lady tell you every week. So they know what to do. I know, they're so smart. That's why we like them.
SPEAKER_00And those words that they come up with every week, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So thank you again.
SPEAKER_00Saving my fucking soul, thank you.

However, we are gonna wrap this shit up because I need to take my drunk ass to bed or something.
SPEAKER_00And I realized that I've had my self-tanner on now for nine hours.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Time to wash this shit off, huh? You're gonna be like Ross. Yep. Oh my god, no, two and then one, right?
SPEAKER_02You're Mississippi. Who said anything about Mississippi's?
SPEAKER_01Like, oh, what number are you? He's like, I'm Puerto Rican. Yeah, right. He's like, I want to be like you, what number?
SPEAKER_00Oh my god. Okay, yeah, it's it's it's not a podcast about a friend reference.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Good night, people. I'm Lisa. Oh, I'm Britney. Oh, wait, I'm not Britney yet. You're not Britney yet. We want to remind you to drink responsibly. Oh, yes, yes, please drink, enjoy that shit. Don't drive. Let somebody else do it so you could throw up in the passenger seat like I do.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm going though, whatever. Well, anyway, you can't do that from the driver's seat, guys. Please do not get behind the wheel if you're drinking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, no, no, please don't. Because then also, what if something happens and you won't be here next week with us? We'll be so sad. Okay, now I'm Lisa.
SPEAKER_00And now I'm Brittany.
SPEAKER_01And until next time, we are out of here.
SPEAKER_00I don't even know what to say. I have too many crazy fucking theories in my head. Bye guys.
